Pigs in Space

As you know it’s all about quality here at Serious Pig. We like to bring you great flavours from only the best ingredients and we won’t compromise on that. We’re committed to using free range pork and by doing so the pigs enjoy a better life and you’ll enjoy a better product.

In Britain we take our food seriously and we want to know where it comes from. We’re also a country of animal lovers and yet much of our meat is produced overseas on intensive farms with no love at all. We say that’s enough of that, because there is another way, the Serious Pig way. Great tasting pork from good quality pigs, bred by responsible farmers who give their pigs the space and fresh air to live happy, healthy lives.

What does free range actually mean?

We often hear the term ‘Free Range’ but we also hear about ‘Outdoor Reared’, so what’s the difference?

If pigs are ‘outdoor reared’, it means that they are born and ‘reared’ outdoors with their mother until they are weaned, usually when they are about 4 weeks old. They’re then taken inside for the rest of their lives.

‘Free range’ refers to pigs that spend all of their lives outside and have permanent access to pasture. They’re born without stalls or crates, reared, weaned and then live the remainder of their lives outside. They have access to shelter and warmth and enjoy lots of space to run around, expressing natural piggy behaviour such as foraging and wallowing. Because they live outside and run around they use more energy and that means they are slower growing, producing a higher standard of meat in succulence, texture and flavour.

It’s not just important to us to know what our food tastes like but also where it comes from, and we welcome traceability and the move away from intensive farming.
